Ranking System

In Ji Yong Martial Arts utilizes both a colored belt (gup) segment and 9 levels of black belt. Please note that the system of advancement found at In Ji Yong is not the typical “commercial belt factory”. Obtaining rank within this training method is a deeply personal experience that reflects not only the obtainment of knowledge and skill, but also a discovery of inner strengths.

Although there is a ranking system within the unit, no man is above another. Individual rank is not a stagnant goal. There exists a temptation to see rank in terms of egocentric value but the resistance of this weakness promotes growth. Rank denotes the levels of self control and awareness that have been acquired by the student. As one advances in rank it is a victory for all because the unit, as a whole is strengthened.

It is tragic, though understandable, that many martial artists see the black belt as an end. This is because many schools have run out of material at this point and teach a repetition of the same basic techniques once the student becomes a black belt, so it is in fact an ending for that student’s learning. More people claim to hold the rank of black belt today than ever before in history. The standards for this rank differ in the extreme amongst various schools and styles. It is important to understand that within In Ji Yong, all continue to progress and learn regardless of rank.
